Why Gridlock? Why Now?
At the time of this writing, DC is (again) in suspended animation. The Government is shut down. Gridlock rules the day. Lately, gridlock seems to be the rule every day, even without a shutdown.
It never used to be this way. Sure, there used to be the occasional shutdown for a few days, or a week, but not like this. Filibusters used to be rare and cataclysmic events, like a “super moon,” or a rare blow-up akin to Pompeii. Now, every day is a filibuster, with demagoguery by congressmen on full display, as these future Presidential contenders in both parties position themselves to become the one and only “true” champions of their opposing causes.
So, what gives? What happened to compromise?
It’s become impossible. That’s what.
There is no longer any middle ground on which to compromise. Two different views of America's future have crystallized, and they mix no better than oil and water. Republicans want...well, a free republic. Democrats are now openly advocating a completely new form of government. The mask is off. They want a socialist regime.
Compromise has become impossible. You can't work together when you desire radically different outcomes.
You can’t have true border security to preserve your national identity and, at the same time, let millions of illegal aliens into the country who wish to completely change our government and culture. You can't have, simultaneously, a free democratic republic, and a socialist government. It's got to be one, or the other. Nor can you have a successful middle-class, while also forcing them to support half the population through budget-busting welfare programs. You can’t provide quality, innovative private healthcare, and also have a socialist, single-payer government-controlled healthcare.
These are all “this-or-that” choices. There is no in-between. No possibility for compromise. We have reached the point where it’s now a matter of national survival. We are either going to get back to our free republic origins, a prosperous economy, and boundless opportunity for all, or we are going to become a 3rd-rate socialist former power in decline...or worse.
